Mount Diablo State Park (4/13/2026)

Today I was able to make it over to Mt. Diablo to find one of my absolute favorite Spring Wildflowers, the Mt. Diablo Fairy-Lantern. And, I DID.

I ALSO surprisingly found a couple Butterfly Mariposa Lilies, ANOTHER absolute favorite. As I try to mix it up so I’m not posting The Same Thing as my two primary photos, it was tough to put two flowers in for today. But, they’re some of my absolute faves. I get teary-eyed when I see them. I love them so. So. There you have it.

It’s beyond late for me, sadly. So my photos will have to tell the story for today’s Naturing. When this is the case, and anyone would REALLY like to know what’s what, one can always check out my observations on iNat. I honestly wish I had time to recount my adventures and moments today, but alas.

I will say that I am feeling so happy about seeing these two beauties. That the Pacific Tent Caterpillar won the day as my mascot. That the Western Blue-eyed Grass reminded me just how gorgeous it is. And I CANNOT believe how utterly exquisite and alien-looking the chrysalis of the Variable Checkerspot is! Never seen that before!!

All in all, a day of so many finds in Mitchell Canyon, even on a mostly shaded day like today from all the passing storm clouds. I always think of that place as bright sunshine and warmth, but not today. And yet look at how much there was to see.
