The Presidio (5/6/2025)

Today I went for a quick check on the Presidio Owlet.

Owlet is bigger. Ma Owl is still on the nest! Looks like it’s getting crowded in there.

While there, a man pulled into the parkling lot, stopped, and came out to ask if I was looking at Owls. Yes, and then he told me he’d recently seen an Owlet low on tree branches “behind the Officer’s Club.”

HUH!

He showed me a photo, we chatted a bit about Owls, a woman came by and asked us what we were looking at, etc.

After I left, I headed to the start of the Ecology Trail and started looking. Eventually, I came to what looked like the tree in his photo. Looked around and saw whitewash up a euc deep in the trees.

Took a look with my binocs, and a fuzzball head peered a little into my view! TWO Great Horned Owlets so close together!!

So those multiple GHO adults I heard before went and made two nests and at least two Owlets!

I headed up the trail and got a great view into the nest. The Owlet was staring right at me. Doing that wonderful imprint stare thing. Can never get enough of that.

A couple folks stopped to ask me about the Owlet, and I shared info like I typically do with my Owl Docent Hat on.

After I emailed photos and location to the Presidio Trust Wildlife Ecologist (Phoebe), I was done. Might not find Owlets in GGPark East this year, but three sets in SF is not too shabby!
