I FOUND THE GREAT HORNED OWLS OF THE LILY POND AND THEIR BABY OWLET OMG OMG OMG!!! i have lately been totally doubting my Owl Witch abilities, not ever having found them with their owlet. BUT, IT HAPPENED! saw on iNat that someone spotted one West of the Lily Pond on 5/1, and i knew it had to be where the family was. first, i was hoping to catch the Red-necked Phalarope that was seen at the Lily Pond yesterday. and, it was still there! Life Bird!! checked the area West on my way there, and i didn’t see any owls. but on my way back, i checked again. AND, THERE SHE WAS. no hooting to help me. she was just out in the open, on a low branch, and AWAKE. tearing apart a small rodent and gulping it down. other birders were nearby looking for them, so i pointed them out to it. then, the male was just below her on the other side, on the tiniest spit of a twig branch. and the furball owlet was high above and well protected. about the same size as the male but furbally all at top. i texted Brian that i found the owls, and he came out to see them! so nice to share them with him. plus, the Red-necked Phalarope. he brought our happy hour bits with him, so we had happy hour on the lawn in front of the Conservatory of Flowers. and, IT WAS A PERFECT FRIDAY!
