today i had a special encounter. i was just about to exit the SFBG’s Friend Gate, when i noticed an Allen’s Hummingbird (i think) just above me in a tree. like two feet from my head. saw it doing something strange (to me). it seemed to grab flower bits, bring it back to the same spot on a tree branch, adjust it, then stomp on it. it was making a nest before my very eyes!! it didn’t mind me watching SO CLOSE to it. just awesome to watch. headed through the Redwood Memorial Grove and tried to find a decent vantage point high enough to spot the Great Horned Owls of the Lily Pond, in the tree they’re nesting in. and, i spotted it! the male, i think! never thought i’d be able to see one of them simply from JFK. but, ya can. can you spot it in my photo?
